English at Silverstone UTC provides an academic journey which seeks to develop resilient problem-solvers who can face challenges with confidence. The English curriculum enables learners to become articulate communicators and caring, tolerant members of society.
In English Language studies, students will have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of texts addressing challenging social topics such as power and conflict resolution. They will develop the ability to think critically, examine evidence and develop an enquiring mind. Through the study of challenging texts in a range of contexts, the English curriculum aims to foster a love of reading which will last a lifetime, enabling students to develop socially, culturally and emotionally. Students will be guided to become excellent communicators, writing for a range of purposes and audiences in both creative and real-life contexts.
All students at Key Stage 4 also study English Literature. Whatever their level of confidence in English, all students follow a curriculum which aims to develop a love of literature by engaging in an exploration of texts which will stay with them for life. Students will study Shakespeare, poetry, modern drama and 19th century fiction in a way which develops their understanding of human relationships, our roles in society and how language shapes meaning.
Ultimately, the study of English builds confidence and the ability to express ideas, views and opinions in a constructive and meaningful way. Our aim is to ensure that our students can read fluently, write confidently and communicate effectively. This enables them to access employment and further study opportunities on whichever career path they choose to follow.
